Course Policies

Values

Pharmacists value personal and professional integrity. Webster's New World Dictionary defines integrity as "the quality or state of being of sound moral principle; uprightness, honesty, and sincerity." This is interpreted to include, but not limited to, taking responsibility for one's actions, truthfulness in dealing with others, and maintaining confidentiality. Plagiarism (using others' works without appropriate citations) and cheating (defrauding, tricking, swindling, or other forms of dishonesty for personal gain) are the antithesis of integrity and constitute unacceptable behavior for pharmacy students and pharmacists. More information regarding School policies may be found on the School's web site regarding Policies and Procedures.

Integrity is demonstrated by working to demonstrate the course objectives as outlined in the "Course Description" and explicated in the values system upon which the course is founded. Please review the entire value systems, which is presented on the "Assignments" page.

Participation

Pharmacy students demonstrate their values by participation. Participation is necessary in order to learn. Participation occurs in all phases of the course: small groups, all-class meetings, completion of assignments, and of course, at the service site. Participation is a visible expression of commitment to the profession and to one's education. The service site has attendance requirements, which are noted in the contract with the site. As a professional, honoring the contract with the service site is expected. Failure to honor the contract automatically results in a failing grade for Pharm 511. Absences interfere with your own and other's learning. Therefore, unless an emergency such as illness, transportation accident, or family crisis involving same exist, students are expected to attend their service site as contracted. When an emergency develops, students must notify their service site via the mechanisim established with the site and Carlson. In addition, notification of Dr. Dawson is needed.

Punctuality is crucial at your service site and is a sign of respect to your peers, your service site workers, and faculty. Thus, you are expected to arrive on time and be prepared to work as scheduled.

If you are ill or have an emergency and cannot meet your obligations at your

  • service learning site, you must notify
  • seminar session, you must notify
  • Please note the order of notification. Notify your service site supervisor and seminar facultyl facilitator first. Dr. Dawson cannot be responsible for notifying these individuals.

Consistent behavioral problems or failure to meet obligations to the site (e.g., attendance and punctuality) will result in a failing grade.
