Emergency Cut Off Concepts

Team Safety was given the responsibilty to design some safety systems for the Electric Fiero. One of these systems was to design a voltage source disconnect to prevent catastrphic motor failure. This disconnect needs to be a complete mechanical disconnect per NEDRA's (National Electric Drag Racing Association) requirements.

It was decided on using a Heinemann GJ1-B Breaker to act as the mechanical disconnect. Since this should be mounted in the rear, the below designs are a method allowing the driver to pull a cable in an emergency which will activate the breaker. Upon investigation of the scrapped Fiero, it was found that the original Automatic Transmission Shifter Cable could be used as the link between the breaker and the driver interface.

The below pictures depict a concept for this link between the driver and breaker. Also included are some sketches from the customer (Stephen Johnsen) showing his own personal desires for this system.

UPDATE: Upon discussion with Rich Redmond (local EV Guru) it has been decided that the Breaker should be mounted up by the driver. This will allow for reduced risk of failure of this safety system not failing, and means that all the power cables will need to be routed to the front of the car. Thus, this safety system is finished and is no longer a concern of the BJ CANE Design Team.
