Conclusion

It is very important for the community to embrace this surge of gentrification, rather than despise it. The University District Strategic Plan has a great way of explaining the future goals for the U District. The economic goal for the community is to “Create a vibrant and attractive business district where a mix of startup tech companies and be incubated, and small independent business owners can flourish.” (27, University District Strategic Plan) In simple terms, the current U-District lifestyle will be maintained through small businesses while career potential will blossom with technology startups. Block 16 is a perfect example of what is in store for the University District. While planners did not expect for the University District to become a new urban hub, the precautions taken to preserve its integrity while improving its future economy looks to be successful thus far. Whether it be the expected rise in population or the growth of the economy, blocks in the U District have to adapt to meet the needs of the environment. Despite Block 16 going through multiple surges of gentrification, further development will be seen on this block to adequately accommodate the needs if the community. The new building on block 16, Russell Hall, is a sample of what is to come in the near future. Satisfying the economic needs of the U District through ground level retail stores and mid-rise residential housing, the fundamental needs for neighborhood growth are being met. Although is no need for topographic modifications to this block, urban planners will look for the best ways block 16 can contribute to the growth of the University District.
