Introduction

Block 27 is located in the south-western corner of the University District in Seattle, Washington. Located between 12th Ave NE and Brooklyn Ave NE and between NE 41st St and NE Campus Parkway, block 27 is a part of the U District, although it is officially a part of the University of Washington campus. Because of its proximity to the university, the U District has a cultural highly influenced by student life and desires. The block has been housed both single-family homes and apartment buildings since it was settled around the time the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exhibition took place. It is currently home to Elm Hall, a relatively new dormitory for University of Washington students, and is part of a strip of campus housing. Because of its fairly recent renovation, block 27 will not be affected in a major way by new rezoning or city planning projects. Studying the history of a single block of the U District shows how developments occurring in nearby areas affect the population and needs of said people.
