University District Stories

University District Stories

a project of HSTAA 208

Introduction

Over the last 150 years, Seattle’s University District has continuously been a prime example of urban development. Although we have learned that history does not repeat itself, it certainly contains familiar themes. This project serves to document several of the major themes observed in the creation and predicted future of the area. We will discuss topics such as increasing population density (especially in modern times), the balance of commercial and residential land use, event-driven development (i.e. the World Fair of 1909), and the progress of public transportation (from the first trains to today’s “light rail”). This exhibit in particular will examine the past, present, and future of the block encompassed by Campus Parkway, 41st street, 15th Avenue, and University Way. We will focus on a variety of factors, such as environmental aspects and future plans for residential development. This discussion will take place over text, image, and audio mediums. I hope this collection will useful for those interested in the rich history of the University District!
