University District Stories

Introduction

Urban area like New York, Tokyo, or downtown Seattle, people often dress the same, do the same thing, and walk the same pace. Because of the fast-pace life, urban area tends to create a stressful atmosphere. However, since University District (U-District) is built to serve the students, faculties, and visitors of University of Washington (UW), it creates it own characteristic. From the university campus, to the most energetic street – the Ave, and to the quitter residential area, it created an atmosphere that is welcoming to everyone with different identity. The block we will be looking at is located between NE 40th Street, Brooklyn Ave NE, NE Campus Parkway, and University Way NE; which is 3 to 4 blocks away from the Ave. This is a really unique block fill with residential building, but unlike the quitter residential area, it is known as the center hub of this side of campus (west campus). Alder Hall is currently the name for this block, a dormitory for UW students. This site report will bring you into the history of this block and the surrounding area. It will also give you a history of Seattle and how U-District got developed from a rural to urban area. In site report 3, you will be able to listen to an audio tour for the full history of this block from 19th century to the present, while you are walking around the block. In the site report, I will be refering this block as block 34.
