From the Prof

Later in the year you'll start to think about what to do during the summer after your first year. You may find a law-related job or a for-credit externship. You may decide to travel or spend time with your family. One thing I can do as your small section professor is to act as a reference for you. (I expect to be fully comfortable being a reference for any of you.) This page contains information designed to assist with references, job-hunting and externships.

If you need a written reference letter, I ask you to write the first draft using the sample provided below as a model, and e-mail it to me, along with your resume. I'll then edit it, usually to brag about you a bit more.

Jobs and Externships

Two other things I can do as your small section professor are to provide career counselling and to supervise externships. I am willing to help you find an appropriate externship supervisor, and act as the "externship supervisor of last resort" if necessary. (I'm an appropriate supervisor for externships with any of the civil legal services organizations, including the Northwest Women's Law Center, and I'm willing to go outside my area of expertise if you can't find someone else to supervise.) I will host a gathering early Winter quarter for you to network with some of my former students about jobs and externships. In preparation for that, you may wish to read the following three items:
