Conclusion

Studying Block 04 has provided me with a deeper understanding of the conditions and trends that have shaped the modern University District. The distinct sections of the block served as reminders of the various stages the U district has occupied through it long trend toward urban development. In the Southeast corner are the vacant lot and single family home, relics from the earliest era of the U District, when it had the character of a residential suburb, with much less density and commerce than it has now. On the northern face of the block are the shell station and retail strip, which show a middle period of development when the U District was becoming more commercially driven, with major routes like 45th Street serving as centers of this growth. Finally, we see in Roosevelt commons the present era of the neighborhood. A modern, multistory office complex that highlights the highly urbanized, information driven economy that defines the current U district. One thing has never changed about block 04 and that is its crucial role in the center of the U district. As we move into new, uncertain eras of development, this block will continue to be at the forefront of change within the neighborhood and city, and must use this platform to provide a good example.
