Introduction

The University District in Seattle is a fast paced urban environment centered around the University of Washington Community. It is a highly diversified place due to the nature of college populations and has an unusually high turnover of its residence due to the time spent in college is typically between four and five years. The high influx of students constantly supplies the area with potential new residents as firms in downtown Seattle and Bellevue look to the University for prospects. In many ways this small area is a microcosm for Seattle as a whole, as it is comprised of a bustling commercial district, high density housing and single family homes. The history of this particular block is a reflection upon the overall need of the University District, evolving from a bare plot of land, to single family housing and present day mixture of commercial buildings and high density residential. By examining this one block, or any block in the University District for that matter, one can see the change over time like layers in bedrock.
