Block twelve between Roosevelt and 11th Ave, as well as Ne 43rd and NE 42nd is mostly a residential area housing a lot of people with its many apartment complexes its main purpose being to provide living space for the many people around the UW area although it provides other services to the people in U-district area, providing tools and materials to sustain the living spaces in which the people live with a small mom and pop hardware store, a court building to settle disputes, and a hotel for visitors from other areas. The only “nice looking” thing on the block is the hotel which was built fairly recently compared to the rest of the buildings which are old, beat up, and overgrown. While walking through this block a few things I noticed raised some questions, for example was this block all ways used for living space or was it once something entirely different. Additionally, because of its extremely close proximity to portage bay was it always a beat-up part of town or did it use to be an area of high trade for fisherman and merchants and does that mean it used to be much nicer because of the high flow of people and commerce through that area? I would have expected my block to be a much nicer part of town and less degraded because of its close proximity to UW and Portage bay as well as the fact that many of the surrounding blocks are well taken care of. In order to get answers to the many questions I have I would need records from construction companies or maybe some old maps of what it used to look like and when it was developed. The answers to these questions are crucial for figuring out the significance and history of this block that I’m sure has many hidden secrets.
