Introduction

The development of cities has a symbiotic relationship with the development of society as a whole. As cities are able to expand and grow, society is able to fill the new space, and use it in new ways. Meanwhile, as society changes and develops new needs and ideas, cities are changed in order to incorporate the new society, while usually keeping some aspects of the old. The U District, for example, has grown and changed throughout history as society dictated, but has remained largely the same. It remains to this day a major shopping center, home to many restaurants and stores for the use of the students. However, one block in particular has established itself as a hub of student need and use. Located between University Way, 15th Ave., 45th St., and 43rd St., this block is home to the University Bookstore. Perhaps the most important store for students in the U District, this single building has contributed the most to the overall history and development of this block.
