Proposed idea for what sidewalks will look like with greenery added. Seattle Department of Planning and Development. January 2015.

Block 9 of the University District is not currently slated to be drastically changed with the growth of the area (Seattle Department of Planning and Development, January 2015). It will remain a residential area, and slight adjustments will be made to make it more accommodating to the increasing population. Changes will be made to the sidewalks to reflect this change, including changing the pavement to indicate where bus stop waiting areas are, where pedestrians can walk, and where bikes should go. The city has also proposed “beautifying” of the street by adding greenery. 42nd and 43rd have both been named “green streets” which means that because of the new transportation services increasing traffic through the area money will be allocated to things like street lights and curbs along these streets. Currently not all of the block is serviced by the bus system but with the new light rail plan for 2021 some west bound busses may adjust their route and be sent through the area. Programs like adopt a park where a company or group can “adopt” a park and keep it clean has been proposed for this area. With the expansions that have been proposed for the school to build more (taller) buildings will create more jobs, and more demand for housing. Ultimately the city will have to support these changes that beneifit the corporations making money off of them, and it is likely that the suburban style homes on my block will be purchased by contractors that can take down the smaller houses and build apartments and condos to profit from.
