Conclusion

The University District has many plans for the future. The intended use for the land in the area has changed drastically over the last 150 years. Originally, The University District was home to Native Americans and wildlife. Then it was an industrial site, valued for its logging and forestry. Once the University of Washington moved to its current campus in 1895, the neighborhood was developing into its own little city. Street development and industrial engineering brought the U District into the automobile age, and brought new residents with it. Between the 1920-60s the largest amount of building development occurred. Recently, there have been significant plans to improve the infrastructure and livability of the area as the U District plans for the construction of a Light Rail station in 2021. It is important to remember how this land was used before settlers arrived in the 1860s, the historic value of the early 20th century architecture, and the demographics of the residents currently living in the U District. It will be very interesting to see the new developments in the rapidly changing University District neighborhood.
