University District Stories

University District Stories

a project of HSTAA 208

Introduction

My block, located between 9th Ave, Roosevelt Way, 42nd St. and 40th St, has experienced a great deal of change over the last 150 years. The history of the U District unfolded a story of industrial enterprise, urban development, and diverse community interaction. It has dramatically transformed from its wilderness origins to the “city within a city.” In many ways the events and development on my block are indicative of larger trends of development within the U District and in Seattle. From civil engineering to residential expansion, my block has experienced the changes of a neighborhood in it physical and historical features. My block has remained mixed-use since its formation: comprised of residential and office buildings. It continues this trend with the construction of a new apartment complex on its south side. The block is adjusting its features to fit the enclave of new pricy residential spaces. By taking a closer look the history of my block, one can better understand the past, present and future of the University District as a whole.
