Site report 2

The block between PASADENA PL. and 7TH AVE. NE, and NE 40TH ST. and NE NORTHLAKE PL were used to be farm land. By looking at the map of 1904, there is no significant tall building for that area. Prior to 1850, there was probably the marshland, and by the time of 1949, we can see from the photo that there is a bungalow in that area, the build is much smaller than which is today. The natural topography of this area is the Northern side is a high land and the southern side is lower land. And, the area between Northern and Southern is relatively flat and was used to be parking lots. By the natural topography of the Northern area is higher and the southern area is lower, there is an exit from the walk way of the Northern area to the building. From the picture of 1949, we can see there wasn’t a way on the western side. And the PASADENA PL did not exist around period of 1940s-1950s. Also, from the 1949’s picture, we can see some trees on the southern and western sides of the block, it made the block surrounding by trees. But nowadays, the Southern side and the western side’s tree got cut, probably because the build need more exits, or as the old building destroyed and rebuilt a new large building, it’s necessary to create more exit from the center of the block or the building. The last photo shown the sidewalk on the Northern side of the block, it is the pre-urban period’s sign. The sidewalk is called Burke gilman Trail, "The Burke The Trail Can Trace Its Origins To The Founding Of The Seattle Lake Shore And Eastern Railway On 15 April 1885 By Ten Men Headed By Judge Thomas Burke And Daniel Gilman"(Mesothelioma Design). The sidewalk doesn’t change, and remain to nowadays. The reason for it may be the main road of NE 40TH ST is mainly for cars and even for different directions for the car’s road, there are separated roads. People around this area need to walk along the NE 40TH ST., whatever the other things changed, there is always a demand for people to walk along the NE 40TH ST. And along with the sidewalk, the trees on the Northern side not changed, the reason is simple-- it is not necessary to cut those trees, and people need those trees to decorate and form green belts. Grassland along 40th St not change, garden of the Northern side of the block not change, the southern side' few separated trees not changed which used to decorate the southern side building.
