Food Waste, lets fix this!

Our action project consisted of making a website that is informative of what food waste is, facts about food waste, how we can make personal improvement to help this matter, and actions that we can take to make this issue more aware to the public and larger community. Our group thought that taking the informative and educational approach to this issue would be the most beneficial way to take action. We started out with many ideas, and thought originally we were going to do an educational panel with a couple different speakers, but then moved towards the website idea. We went with this idea because it is more concrete, people can go about the website looking at what they are most interested in, and they can take action by posting a social media post aimed at the companies that are contributing most to food waste, so they can see that we do care about this issue. Our website: https://foodwastebusters.wordpress.com/ contributed to the larger community and globe because anyone can access it, and food waste is a global problem, not just local. Food waste effects every part of the world, and it is crazy how so much food is wasted while a lot of the globe is starving. The big question is how can we fix this problem, but first, we need to tackle our high number of food waste, and then figure out how we can get more food to those who need it. This is a controversial problem that seems like it will take awhile to fix, but education and awareness is a good start. “In the U.S., 40% of our food produced goes to waste”. If we all as a larger community focus each meal on not wasting our food through simple methods, like taking a to-go box, we could reduce that number of food being wasted.

This project was similar to ours in attempting to inform an audience and how to make personal changes to improve the state of our earth. While our topic was water, food waste was another topic I would’ve liked to explore. Media is a huge tool of social change, information, and education, so I like how you guys chose to make a website as a project. I think it is very important to follow popular culture while trying to make a change because it has such an influence on what we do, what we say, and what we believe.

As you stated, the big question is how can we fix the problem. The problem of food waste and poverty is indeed global, and I agree with you when you say that education and awareness are a good start, that is where change always starts. When facing a problem as huge as this, little steps are sometimes the only steps we as individuals can take, and those little steps will hopefully lead to collective action and bigger steps to facing the enormous problem of global poverty.

My thoughts on this topic would be how enormous problem of food waste is. The problem of food waste and poverty is that it is increasing rapidly in global. There are people that are starving but people don’t understand how serious this problem is. I think we need an education about how much we waste food in a day so that we know how big the problem is. In my opinion, we have everything we need, but some countries are lack of the basic needs of life including food and water. We don’t actually face the poverty that much, so we do not understand. poverty has become a large issue around the world. it is something that we need to learn for those of people that haven’t face the poverty.

I agree with your post. I have been associated with companies in the past that have greatly wasted food in the tens of thousands of pounds. It was sad and sickening to watch. I have a buddy that also works as a warehouse loader for big companies like Walmart , target, and other major companies. He told me the amount of waste and throwing away food is so bad it would make you have nightmares. These companies have actual laws that protect their waste so it cannot be collected and distributed, so no one can just drive around and take from their garbage bins. You should youtube videos that expose Walmart and other industries tossing out perfectly fine food. we could distribute that food to food banks, homeless shelters, and even to some animal shelters for some of the products wasted. these companies have money set aside that already determine “loss” so they don’t even remotely care.
