Food waste has always been a potential issue to concern about and it is not an exaggeration to say that it is one of the biggest problem that people face in the world today.Although people now are paying more attention to the issue and are trying to improve the situation of food waste, there is still over $1 trillion value of food have been wasted globally. So how can we really make the change?

For our group’s action project, we were doing the topic on food waste and particularly waste apples in Seattle areas. We were focusing more on the younger generations and have made a children’s game board that showing the paths apples take as they are shipped to individuals, stores, and restaurants along the way. In the board game, there will be six specific places/topics that the players will stop before they reach the end and each place in the route will introduce and gives facts about the apples, like how they grow, shipped and the solutions to deal with waste apples. The project is meant to teach the younger generations the problems that can be brought on by the food waste and get them involved in creating a more sustainable future. As they move along the game board, there are different characters help explain the problems of food waste and offer helpful solutions, provides alternative suggestions to educate them and raise awareness in younger generations by encouraging them to participate in a necessary change. For us, we think that being able to convey the idea to the younger generations would really made a lot of difference in the future. I can see the connections to food waste and apple industry in food culture and system thinking we have discussed in the class. People nowadays are paying more attention to the nutrients of the food and follow the trend of “freshness” of the food. Take apple as an example, many apples get throw away are not because they are bad that can be consumed, but they are not fresh enough, so the markets decide to get rid of them and therefore has created more food waste. However, being able to see the growth of apple and the whole process of how they have been transmitted to different places, just like how we see the plant started from the seed in the class, the kids will appreciate and cherish more of the food they are eating.
