Food Deserts: A Local and Global Crisis

My action project group was the public health group. Personally, I chose this action project group because public health type work is almost the polar opposite of what I do on a day to day basis. However, despite starting the project with the mindset that my action project group would be challenging, I don’t think I was prepared for just… Read more »

Food Accessibility and ‘Food Justice’

The collaborative action project put on my group was centered around education of our topic (food accessibility) with the addition of giving back. Our event was a screening of the short documentary ‘Food Justice: A Growing Movement,’ with the bonus of a free chipotle burrito to those who donated a food item to the UW Food Pantry. World Hunger Benefit Concert: Explained

This project was one of my first experiences planning an event for a large group of people. While our posters held some information relating stormwater to our class, much of that information was to… Read more »

The thing that was most beneficial was learning about the local public health organizations and what they did, “Healthy King County” and “Food Coalition Washington” were two great organizations. Food Coalition of Washington even had a legislative agenda and goals that will be useful for enacting and advocating… Read more »

Global Topics to Local Action

At first, I was cautious about whether my groupmates and I were all on board to focus on Food Security as our topic.  I worried that I would not be able to contribute as much as I would like due to my lack of knowledge about the field, as well as the wide variety of politics surrounding food as I learned… Read more »

The Honeys

At the beginning of this course when we first learned about the action project we were going to do in the future, I was nervous because I didn’t know anyone in this class, and yet I would have to work with a group of them on what sounded like a pretty intense project. However, once we began working, the nerves… Read more »
